An Ant System Algorithm for Coloring Graphs

This paper presents an ant system algorithm for the graph coloring problem. This ant system algorithm has several new features compared to previous ant system algorithms for the coloring problem. The main idea of the algorithm is for a colony of ants to color the graph, in which ants use its knowledge about the local neighborhood, recently visited nodes, and information stored at each vertex. For proving generality of the algorithm, several instances from different categories of graphs posted on the COLOR02 Symposium web site were selected to test the algorithm. The algorithm performed well and matched the best known results for most benchmark graph instances and was close to the best known for others. The algorithm performed very well in comparison to previous heuristic algorithms for the graph coloring problem.
